Eurotox 2025

During the upcoming EUROTOX 2025 Mitologics will present the poster: Differentiated Cell Models for Mitochondrial Dysfunction Assessment: Tools to Predict and Prevent Organo-toxicity”.

Certain chemicals, particularly some pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, are known to directly impair mitochondrial function and/or integrity. These compounds disrupt key components of oxidative phosphorylation, compromising ATP production and significant rising the levels of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS). These dysfunctions can lead to cellular energy imbalance and oxidative stress, ultimately resulting in tissue and organ damage, and even death in the most severe cases.

This work shows how highly sensitive and accurate in vitro assays can bring better understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial toxicity and thus minimize the risk of developing mitochondria-damaging agents.

It illustrates our expertise by assessing mitochondrial liabilities of some known toxicants (amiodarone, acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, lovastatin, doxorubicin) on a panel of cell-based assays using differentiated cell lines that mimic the structural and metabolic features of specific human organs, including HepaRG cells for liver, H9C2 for heart, LLC-PK1 for kidney, and C2C12 for skeletal muscle.
